LOS ANGELES—Coming up with an event theme can sometimes be daunting. But sometimes inspiration is found right outside your window.
Intertwined Events recently did just that, using some of the diverse neighborhoods throughout the city of Los Angeles to influence the look and feel of an event.
“When using a city or location as inspiration for event design, it is important to go beyond the surface-level elements that usually represent the city,” explained Katie Webb Brundige and Meghan Clem, co-founders of Intertwined, Inc. “This event was designed to kick off a new campaign/project in the city of Los Angeles, so the design was curated to celebrate the history, culture, and the emotional connection people feel to the location.”
The kick-off event for 400 guests took place in October at the South Park Center in downtown Los Angeles.
The space was divided into four vignettes, each based on an area of the city: DTLA/Arts District, Hollywood, Coastal, and Beverly Hills.

Designed by Enso Creative, the DTLA/Arts District portion featured vibrant decor, including a spray paint can wall and oversize cans. “The design was layered with custom graffiti-style vinyls, greenery, and tactile textures that reflect the liveliness of this LA neighborhood,” Brundige and Clem explained.
The F&B, which was provided by Patina Catering, included ceviche, cochinita pibil, burger sliders, and French fries, with colorful glazed donuts and dipped churros swirls to mimic spray-painted murals.
The area inspired by Old Hollywood glamour, which was created by Eleven Eleven Event Productions, boasted dramatic draping, oversize florals, disco balls, and classic black-and-white checkered flooring, a reference to classic films and Hollywood glam imagery, Brundige and Clem said.
Influenced by the local farmer’s markets, the food selections included Asian-inspired karaage chicken, vegan dan dan noodles, a salmon edamame bowl, and Filipino-inspired pitaya halo-halo.
Inspired by the expansive California coastline and the endless sunshine that defines LA, the event design for the coastal-inspired section, curated by Three Petals Design, evoked a quintessential beach day.
The blue wooden wave installation featured an abundance of warm-hued florals that emulated a sunset on the sand, alongside rattan and wooden seating and a food display. The culinary offerings included ahi tuna baguettes, wagyu Korean hot dogs on a stick, and mini Pop-Tart blondie bars.

Lastly, a gallery wall of photos of Beverly Hills and its palm tree-lined streets decorated the fourth area. A pink and green color palette and layered dark wood textures gave guests the feeling of stepping into an iconic hotel lobby.
When designing around a city as a theme, Brundige and Clem recommend focusing on creating something that feels familiar and calls on nostalgia. “By leaning into feeling rather than iconography, the designs felt more authentic, elevated, and not overly cheesy,” they said of the LA event.
