Whimsical Patterns

Designer Elle Cantrell has already noticed an uptick in wallpaper patterns with “a bit of whimsy and cheekiness,” and the fun designs are an excellent way to amplify character in any space. Whether you go for a dark, whimsigoth style or a vibrant, bright display, look for fantastical patterns that feature nature-inspired motifs—like foliage, mushrooms, birds, butterflies, and monkeys—or other playful images, like of hot air balloons, the circus, or bikes.

“Deep, dark tones—like navy, emerald, and charcoal—are being used to create dramatic, intimate spaces with gold or brass accents for a sophisticated look,” says Elizabeth Rees, cofounder of Chasing Paper.

Pair any moody wallpaper with paint and furnishings in a similar color palette, and you’ll have a cozy setting that’s truly everlasting.

Tactile Backdrops

While adding texture to a room through rugs and upholstery can make a room feel inviting, textured wallpaper takes that concept up a notch. Designer Stacy Garcia recommends using a wood veneer wallcovering to encourage warmth or grasscloth ones for an organic touch. “Embossed vinyl wallpapers are gaining traction, delivering intricate detailing and durability, making them especially well-suited for moisture-prone areas like bathrooms and kitchens,” she adds.

Bravo agrees, noting “embossed and woven wallpapers take texture to new heights, adding dimensionality and encouraging an immersive experience.”

Intricate Botanicals & Oversized Florals

Rees also expects wallpaper tied to biophilic design will surge in popularity—especially “wallpapers featuring lush, oversized florals, tropical plants, and intricate botanicals.”

Garcia agrees, “Nature-inspired designs continue to dominate with lush botanicals, hand-drawn landscapes, and finishes mimicking raw materials like linen or plaster.”

It’s no surprise these patterns are best suited for earth tones, including Fire Clay, York Wallcovering’s 2025 Color of the Year .

Mixing and Matching

Why choose one wallpaper when you can mix and match a few in the same room or adjacent spaces? “Make sure you pay attention to the color tones and [that] your prints aren’t too similar,” says designer Mimi Meacham. “Try mixing a floral with a geometric print or grasscloth texture.”

In a single room, you can use different wallpapers on the walls and ceiling. Or use one bold wallpaper as an accent, like the panels in this wine niche, and another that’s more subtle or textured on the walls or ceiling.

Don’t dismiss the shiny offerings. “Metallic finishes in gold, silver, and copper will add quiet glamour,” Bravo says. “These reflective surfaces catch light beautifully, introducing depth and a sense of understated sophistication.”

Big print designed to catch your eye will be even more prevalent. “Maximalist designs with rich, vibrant colors like jewel tones and bold prints, such as animal patterns or abstract art, are making a strong comeback,” Rees says. “These types of patterns and prints are injected into spaces as a ‘dopamine hit,’ evoking feelings of happiness and positivity in the home.”

Over the past few years, homeowners and designers alike have used mural wallpapers to envelope rooms for a true wow factor. But now, there’s a shift toward ones that are unmistakably personal. “Advances in digital printing allow for customizable wall murals, where homeowners can select or create their own patterns—from personal photographs to abstract designs,” Rees says.
